Damn yo, you need to translate that shit. Very fresh though… very fresh.

  2. Poltergeist says:

I tried to translate it. There might be some false grammer. Sorry for that.

Many artists considering themselfs to bring back the sound of the Golden Era are nothing but social conservative bores. Not so in case of The Doppelgangaz: Their sound actually is a gripping, authentic reference to the times when “Beats, Rhymes & Life” was all that counts. During a gig as the opening act of Joe Budden at the SoB’s club in New York, JUICE stringer Amaury “Ammo” Feron spoke with the mysterious eastcoast duo, Matter Ov Fact (MC) and EP (MC, Producer).

How you guys got to know each other?

EP: We know each other since fist grade. First of all we are friends but we always shared interests, too: Back then it was sports, then music. We even had the same point of view. In 1997 we started with tapes on which we were rapping over popular beats. Then we gained some equipment and in 1998 we produced our first own music, simple Casio stuff. Later I got a demo version of Reason and recorded my beats with a cheap recording device because with the demo version I wasn’t able to export the files! (laughs) 2001 I started working on a job and bought me a regular version of Reason.

Matter Ov Fact: By the way, the roles were a foregone conclusion depending on the colors of our skin. Because he is white he HAD to be the producer, and because I am black I HAD to be the rapper. (laughs)

It’s obvious that the HipHop from NY in the 90s is one of your most essential influences. Especially Lord Finesse shines out clearly.

Matter Ov Fact: Well, he just rules. (laughs) Just a view days ago we watched some of his videos. You remember his battle with Percee P? The man is a legend, his voice is so clear, almost every punchline is worth a quote. When we are in the studio we always ask ourselfs: “What would Finesse have sayed right now?” Insofar at least his spirit is featured on our album. To be honest: I don’t even buy current rap music. It’s not that I don’t like it at all. But there is so much dope old rap music that I haven’t heard yet. And this sound influences me much more than the new stuff.

EP: We are searching for the raw HipHop that can hardly be found nowadays. I’m not a hater but I don’t feel the same with the latest rap and I also don’t want to force me to. We study the HipHop from the era that mostly influenced us.

How you came in contact with Digga who signed you?

EP: I knew his name since the time he used to produce for Cam’ron. One day I saw him completely by accident in Garden State Mall in New Jersey where he was shopping with his family. I didn’t want to bother him so at home I checked his website and wrote him an email. After six month without response his manager called and invited us to his studio. He offered me to become his student. We worked on a few songs and someday we became “Demo of the Month” at hiphopgame.com. Back then we used to call ourselfes Five Nickels. After that he signed us at Six Figga Entertainment.

Why did you put out your debut album “2012: The New Beginning” for free download?

Matter Ov Fact: All that matters right now is to be heared and get attention on us. We wanted to assure that as many people as possible listen to our album.

EP: The feedback is stunning. Yesterday a kid on the internet wrote that this is the best album in the year 2009! (laughs)

One more thing: The album is awesome dope! Thanks for giving it away for free.

    Peace from Germany!
